| Objective: Review on the clinical value of Chinese Medicine (Method of Heart and Spleen Enhancement, 补益心脾法) in the treatment of Alzheimer.Method: 60 elderly people who were diagnosed as suffering from Alzheimer with main symptoms of weakening in heart and spleen functions were selected for the study. They were given nine-month treatment of medicines. The method of treatment was Heart and Spleen Enhancement (补益心脾法). Prescriptions were heart and spleen meridian with Chinese medicines that have the properties of delaying aging. Basic medicines were Astragalus membranaceus Bge (黄芪). Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch (生地黄), Dioscorea opposite: Thunb(山药 )., Polygala tenuifolia Willd (远志 ), Acorus gramineus Soland (石菖'), Ziziphus jujuba Mill (枣仁) , Ophiopogon japonicus (麦 冫冬),Gynostemma pentaphyllum (绞股蓝),Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch(甘草), and others. Diagnostic criteria were: Cognitive Ability test, TCM Diagnostic and Treatment Effect criteria, Hasegawn Dementia Scale (HDS), observations of symptoms before and after treatment, and changes in the Ability of Daily Life (ADL) ? Result: After 9-month of treatment, it was shown that the total effective rate for method of Heart and Spleen Enhancement (补益心脾法) in treating symptoms of Alzheimer (including alertness, sleeping behaviors, diet, etc.) is 83%. In terms of cognitive improvement (referring to learning abilities, emotional and response abilities, etc.), the total effective rate is 97%.
