Objective To investigate the influences of arsenic and fluoride exposure on children's intelligence and growth. Methods The subjects were divided into four groups according to the type of selected disease areas in endemic arsenism areas and endemic fluorosis areas. Four groups included the high arsenic and fluoride group, the high fluoride group, the high arsenic group and the control group. We analyzed the level of children's intelligence and growth of four groups. The score of children's intelligence were measured by the Combined Raven's Test -The Rural in China (CRT-RC) method. The appliances and methods of the growth surveys were used according to the asking concerned. The surveyed indicators included morphological parameter and functional parameter, morphological parameter includes height, body weight, and chest circumference and functional parameter includes the vital capacity. The arsenic content of water and urine was determined by Hydrige Generation atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy (HG-AFS). The fluoride content of urine was determined by fluoride selective ion electrode. Single variable statistical analysis was rank sum test. Multivariate statistical analysis was multiple linear regression. Results The level of children's intelligence of the high fluoride group was lower significantly than that of the control group(P<0.01).The level of children's intelligence of the high arsenic and fluoride group was lower than that of the control group(P<0.05)and was the same with that of the high fluoride group(P>0.05).The level of children's intelligence of the high arsenic group was the lowest in four groups(P<0.01).The level of children's intelligence was negatively correlation with the urine arsenic concentration(r=﹣0.212,P<0.01)and urine fluoride concentration(r=﹣0.103, P<0.05). For the indicator of growth, the children's height of the high fluoride group was lower significantly than that of the control group(t=2.40,P<0.05),the children's body weight of high arsenic group was lower significantly than that of the control group(t=3.37,P<0.05), the children's vital capacity of the high arsenic and fluoride group was lower significantly than that of the control group(t=2.73,P<0.05). So it's obvious that children's intelligence and growth could be affected by high arsenic or high fluoride concentration and it's more significant that high arsenic concentration affects children's intelligence. It indicates that arsenic exposure and fluoride exposure can affect Children's intelligence and growth. Conclusion Children's intelligence and growth can be affected by high arsenic or high fluoride concentration. It must make effective intervention to protect the children's health. Ultimately it promotes the quality of nonage life in disease areas.
