Objective To understand the quality of life state and its related factors for touching dust workmen in coalmines in Shanxi and to provide scientific bases for formulating policies to improve their quality of life. Methods 305 coal miners were randomly selected by cluster sampling based on working groups. Possible factors were investigated and quality of life was measured by WHOQOL-BREF. Then the quality of life state was studied and corresponding related factors were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results We got 305 validated from 330 questionnaires with answering rate 93.84%. The mean scores of physical, psychological, social and environmental domain were 12.64±2.21, 12.76±2.12, 12.13±2.92 and 10.11±2.97, respectively and statistically lower than the normal ranges. 242 (79.3%) workmen had'average','good'or'pretty good'feelings of their own quality of life. 209 (68.5%) workmen had'average','good'or'pretty good'feelings of their own health state. The mean score of own judgment of quality of life was 75.0±20.0 with minimum 10 and maximum 100. Single factor analysis found that gender, birthplace, the only child, marriage state, educational level, interests, working years, types of working, touching dust years, daily working hours, working system, welfare satisfaction, social status, working danger, smoking, drinking, respiratory symptoms, physical examination, illness, family trouble and appetite were correlated with most of physical, psychological, social and environmental domain. Based on multiple linear regression analysis, the ranked factors from strong to weak correlated with physical domain were educational level, daily working hours, family trouble, working danger, appetite and illness. The ranked factors from strong to weak correlated with psychological domain were types of working, welfare satisfaction, illness, appetite, working danger, interests, smoking, respiratory symptoms, the only child and marriage state. The ranked factors from strong to weak correlated with social domain were daily working hours, welfare satisfaction, educational level and birthplace. The ranked factors from strong to weak correlated with environmental domain were types of working, daily working hours, welfare satisfaction, working danger, illness, appetite, social status, smoking and drinking. Conclusion The quality of life for touching dust coal miners was lower. But their subjective feelings were positive.
