Hubei Maidong (Radix Liriopes) is a dried root tuber of Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma in Liliaceae. It is also an authentic and superior medicinal herbals in Hubei province, and almost of them come from the country of Xiangfan. It was regarded as a variety of Liriope spicata (Thunb.)Lour. In 1985 it was named Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma by the researcher of Xinqi Chen and Yuanjun Ma, and since 1995 it has been registered in China Pharmacopoeia. It is often used to nourish Yin and moisten the Lung, promote the production of body fluid, clear away the heart-fire and relieve restlessness. We have studied the species and quality of Hubei Maidong in following aspects: (1)Try to find the history original of Hubei Maidong from the ancient herbal works.(2) Establish the standard of seedling of Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma according to the appearance characters related with its growing.(3)Establish the quality standard of crude drug Hubei Maidong. (4) Established the fingerprint chromatograph of polysaccharides by the method of high performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE).The research results are as follows:1. From the picture of ancient herbal works, we can find that Hubei province has a long history of planting and using the plant of Liriope. This is basically according with the custom of today. It also can show that there is its history original in a certain extent to regard the Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma as the authentic and superior medicinal herbals in Hubei province.2. According to the observing of appearance of seedling of Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma and consulting the standard of ginseng seedling, we established the standard of seedling of Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma principlly.3. In the research of quality standard, We mainly studied on pharmaco gnosy , qualitative and quantitative analysis of Liriope spicata var. prolifera Y. T.Ma. In the aspect of pharmacognosy: we find the histologic characters of Hubei Maidong have a distinct variation, especially the number of phloem bundle and the layers of sclereid. So we should pay more attention to them in the distinction of medicinal materials. Furthermore there is a direct connection between the fixed number of year and the number of phloem bundles. Besides we also established a simple and accurate method for the determination of polysaccharides in Hubei Maidong . Phenol-sulphuric acid colrimetry was used. As a results, λ max=491.1nm, and standard curve was liner in the concentration range 9.36-65.49mg/L, the average recovery was 105.4% (n=5,RSD=4.52%).The method was simple, rapid and reliable, is a perfect method of quality determination.4. Methods of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) was developed for the establishment of traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM) fingerprints of Hubei Maidong. which demonstrated the advantage of capillary electrophoresis used in TCM quality control for it's high separation performance , fast analysis and low cost . The CZE optimization conditions are buffer solution 100mmol/ L boric acid with pH10.2 ,uncoated fused-silica capillary 54 cm (50 cm effective length ,50 u m I. D. ) , UV detector at 192nm ,the sample hydrodynamic injection 34.5 kPa ? s (5 p. s. i. ? s) , operation voltage 25 kV and column temperature 25 ℃. The established fingerprint chromatography is stable and credible, and could be used as characteristic fingerprint spectrum for Hubei Maidong.5. The quality control standard of Hubei Maidong was made out according to the above experiments results. It is suggested that polysaccharides should be regarded as the important components in Hubei Maidong and the content of it should be not less than 16%.
