3D visualization from medical tomography images is a multi-disciplinary subject. It is an important application of computer graphics and image processing in biomedical engineering. Its effect to medical treatment modernization would be revolutionary and far-reaching.The realization method of 3D visualization in medical tomography images is discussed in this paper. First, images segmentation, affine, scale, translation, image section plane displaying in arbitrary direction, image smoothness and so on are discoursed. Second, 3D shape's establishing, 3D geometry translation, concealing curve and surface processing, pseudo-color processing are researched and summarized. Third, the design idea of using OpenGL to exploit and realize 3D visualization system of medical tomography images is introduced, which includes how to realize the function of coordinate translation, the 3D modeling, the 3D circumrotation and projection. At last, this paper introduces a 3D visualization software system of medical tomography images which is developed on the Windows XP platform and Borland C++ builder 6. We reconstructed a 3D human head using this system; the data source is 256*256*176*2 MRI dataset. Then we provide the 3D visualization of skeletal and skin tissue using Marching Cubes and Ray Casting arithmetic. The principle, realization arithmetic, realization method and application about special 3D volume visualization are brought forward and summed up.
