OBJECTIVE: Determine the effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture in regards to ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) metabolism and distribution in guinea pigs.METHODS: Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment, a pilot trial, confirmed the period of acclimation and ensured that the scobutigenic diet (0. 5mg/100g/d AA) effectively reduces tissue and plasma ascorbic acids levels. The second experiment will be the full-scale experiment testing the objective outlined above. After the first phase (14 days) of decreasing the concentration of ascorbic acid in the organs we divided 72 guinea pigs into three groups: ascorbic acid with or without acupuncture and acupuncture group. 1mg/100gw/d Vitamin C was given the Vc and Vc+Acupuncture groups. In the second phase (10 days) group Acupuncture and Acupuncture+Vc had acupuncture needles twice a day, using 2 points: LV-3 Tai Chong and BL-18 Gan Shu. The samples of blood and liver, heart, lungs, kidneys and spleen organ tissues were taken at day 1, day 4, day 7 and day 10 and analysed by the pharmacokinetic analysis methods ( PAM ) (pharmacokinetics is the science which describes quantitatively the uptake of drugs by the body, their biotransformation, their distribution, metabolism, and elimination from the body).RESULTS: Acupuncture influence the distribution of Vitamin C in Guinea Pigs. Acupuncture on the related points of Liver Meridian increase the concentration of Ascorbic Acid in the liver and decrease the concentration in .the other organs (spleen, lung, heart, kidney). CONCLUSION:1. Acupuncture on "Taichong" and "Ganshu" points on the liver Meridian increases the concentration and maintenance of Ascorbic acid in the target organ (liver).2. Acupuncture on the related points of Liver Meridian! decrease the concentration in the other organs (spleen, lung, heart, kidney).3. Acupuncture influences the targeted distribution of Vitamin C in Guinea Pigs.4. Acupuncture influences the distribution of Vitamin C in animals. This experiment will be a reference of the further research in other drugs and target organs. This is also a supplement of Targeted Drug Delivery System (TDDS) theory.
