The Sour pomegranate seeds (the Sezu) as the Tibetan drugs frequently used for treating the digestive disorders, the diarrhoea, the dysentery, the gastricism and the other gastrointestinal diseases. The multidimentional system studies for the Sezu were undertaken in the respects of the plant resource distribution, the morphology, the histology, phrmacodynamics and specific effective components. A detailed survey .were carried. The main results are as follows:.1. The plant resource distribution and the survey for the main growing area. The main growing area of the Sour Pomegranate is the county of Danba, theGanzi Tibetan self-government state, Sichuan,China. The primary-source plant of the Pomegranate seeds as the Tibetan drug used for the present work has been ditermined as Punica granatum L. which has the red single (6) petal, short flower thread (5-7mm),sour fruit and sour seeds. The above results have been not reported in the available literature2. The pharmacodynamics screening of the effective sites of the Sour Pomegranate seeds.According to the medicine function of the Pomegranate seeds ,the clinical practices and the Tibetan medicine theory ,the model of the white diarrhoea mouse was selected for the pharmacodynamics screening of the effective sites of the Sour Pomegranate seeds. The obtained results demonstrated that the sites extracted by the Solvent B showed significant antidiarrhoea activity.3. The investigation of the specific effective components.Specific characteristic spots of the Sezu (the specific sour pomegranate seeds)3were first found from the effective sites of the drug using TLC tracing under the guiding of the pharmacology. And then two individual compounds were isolated out of the above spots using the dry column chromatography, flash chromatography and the others . The structural analysis was performed according to IR. 'HNMR. 13CNMR, MS and elementary analysis. A compound was characterized as: 8-Naphthalenedicarboxal- dehyde, 4,5-dihydroxymethyl. It may be a new one which has been not reported in the available literature and designated as punicolal by us. The compound is a characteristic component of the Sezu .4. The studies on the drug qualification standard-TLC Characterizationand the determination of the component contents. The contents of Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid in the Sezu were first determined simultaneousy in the present work using HPLC, which established the fundation for qualification standard determination and the further study on the Sezu.
