We reviewed the points of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and modern medicine on the function of spleen and stomach. And summarize the research of the two kinds of medicine on etiology and pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia(FD) as well as the research of the methods to treat it. We found neither TCM nor modern medicine had yet find an ideal method or drug to cure it though it has a high rate of incidence.My teacher believe that TCM has advantage to treat FD because it is named according to a series of symptoms just as the syndrome of TCM. So he accumulated a lots of experiences on treatment of FD with TCM recipes according to the theories of TCM. On the basis of the theories of TCM and the experiences of famous doctors before and my teacher, we defined the pathogeneses of FD as deficiency of spleen, heat of stomach, stasis of liver qi and the sludging of blood. So the principles of the treatment are to regulate the functions of spleen and stomach and the movement of qi and blood, harmonize the cold and heat of organs. According to the principles, we choice four fitting recipes to constitute Si He Tang(SHT). The main gradients of SHT is a recipe from Shang Huan Lun called Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang(BXXXT). It can regulate the movement of qi and the relation of cold and heat of organs. The secondary gradient is Xiao Chai Hu Tang(XCHT),which can harmonize the functions of spleen and liver. Another gradient is Zuo Jin Wan(ZJW) which can regulate the functions of stomach and liver. The last gradient, Dan Shen ying(DSY) has the effect of promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis and promoting circulation ofqi to relieve pain. The combination of the four recipes can keep the balance of movement of qi and blood as well as cold and heat, which is the fit state of spleen and stomach.75 patients were involved in this study and were divided into five groups, which included group of SHT, XCHT, DSY, ZJW and BXXXT. All the patients in this five groups were administered five recipes as one dose a day respectively and four weeks a course. Observe the change of empty function of stomach and the result of electrogastrogram, as well as the improvement of the main symptoms.The results of the study showed that the four recipes all have some degree effects on FD and can make different symptom improved respectively. They also improve empty function of stomach and the result of electrogastrogram. But the efficacy of each recipe is not as good as the combination of the four recipe - SHT. So the results indicated that SHT is more considerate on the complicated pathogenesis and the four basic recipes are synergic.
