PURPOSE: To explore die surgical methodes and time of retinal injury caused by penetrating trauma with intraocular foreign bodies(ITOB) and to analyse the prognostic outcome.METHODES:We retrospectively reviewed the prognostic outcome of 64 patients who were admitted to our hospital because of retinal injury caused by penetrating trauma with IOFB from 19?7 through 2000.RESULTS:57 eyes from 57 patients who underwent vitreoretinal surgeons combined with removal of IOFB at the same time.7 eyes from 7 patients who underwent vitreoretinal surgeons at the second time after removal of lOFB.Time between injury and vitreoretinal surgeon in 1-3 days 28 eyes, in 4-10 days 7 eyes, after 10 days29 eyes, surgical methodes:?proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and/or epiretinal membrane peelingjng in 18 eyes.?relaxing retinoctomy in 4 eyes.(Dscleral bucking in 43 eyes secondary retinal hemorrhage in 2 eyes(3.1%) and optic atrophy in 1 eyes(1.7%).55 patients(55 eyes) were followed up over 6 months.Main complications included PVR in 11 eyes(20%) and retinal detachment in 7 eyes(12.7%).26 eyes(47.3%) achieved final vision acuty of 0.1 or better. Most of the eyes vision acuty get better postoperatively CONCLUSION:The key to manage the retinal injury caused by penetrating trauma with IOFB is mat we correctly choose surgical methodes and time according to complicated circumstances.
