Objective: To analyze the characteristics and occurrence of silent mitral stenosis(SMS) in rheumatic heart disease. Methods: Recorded the course, morbidity of atrial fibrillation and frank heamoptysis and results of echocardiography in 8 patients with SMS, then compared them with 24 patients of mitral stenosis with diastolicmurmur at the apex. Results: Compared with the control group, the group of SMS had a much longer course and much higher morbidity of atrial fibrillation and frank heamoptysis. The results of echocardiography also showed that the cardiac morphologic changes in SMS group were more severe than that in control group. Conclusion: SMS was the end phase of rheumatic mitral stenosis and its main causes were the decrease in volume and velocity of blood through mitral oritice.
