Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of the expression of Carcinoembryonic Antigen mRNA (CEAmRNA) in blood of patients with colorectal cancer. Methods Nest RT-PCR techique was used to detect CEAmRNA in peripheral blood and drainage venous blood of colorectal cancer patients before tumor resection and after tumor resection. The serum CEA values were determined by chemiluminesence reaction. The CEAmRNA in healthy people blood were as negnetive controls and that in tumor tissue or VOLO cancer cells plant as positive controls. Results In p抏ripheral blood, the positive rate of CEAmRNA was higher after tumor resection than that before tumor resection (69.6% vs 34.8%, p=O.O4). In drainage venous blood, the rate before tumor resection was higher than that after tumor resection (56.5% vs 17.4%, p~O.92). There was a significant difference of CEAmRNA positive expression in blood between patients with liver metastasis and non-liver metastasis. There was more sensitive in drainage venous blood (p=O.OO9) than in peripheral blood (p~O.O3). However, there was no significant correlation between the prevalence of CEAmRNA and serum CEA-2-lever or other clinicopathalogic characteristics. CEAmRNA was detected in all (23 cases of 23) of tumor tissue, but was not detected in peripheral blood of all health people. Conclusion The presence of CEAmRNA in blood was an indicator of the spread of tumor cells in patients with colorectal cancer. And the operation could provoke the hematogenous dissemination of cancer cells.
