Japan and ASEAN have a history of being trade partners as long as forty years. The volume of trade between them has risen rapidly since 1980s'. To Japan, ASEAN, China, USA and EU are the biggest four trade partners. But since 2005, it has exceeded EU, and become the third. The focus of Japanese foreign trade development has always been North America and Western Europe for many years. But with the strengthening of the world economic regionalization, Japan has paid attention to the countries and areas around it gradually. With over 500 millions people and economic advancement in recent years, we can see ASEAN has been more and more important on the stage of world economy. Because of this Japan realized the importance of trade between Japan and ASEAN.But with the new climax of development of the world FTA especially the bilateral free trade, bilateral free trade had been the point of world economic regionalization and integration. Facing the economic organizations appearing in North America and Western Europe which are used to resist the offense of Japanese trade, Japan has to adjust his external economic development strategy. Japan hopes to push the economic corporation with Asia and to set up a free trade area leading by itself. This time Japan takes aim at ASEAN. So in recent years Japan not only think highly of the development of trade with ASEAN countries, but also emphasize free trade with them. Japan has signed contracts of economic partnership with Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei and Vietnam, and some of them have come into effect. Except for these bilateral economic agreements, Japan signed a multilateral agreement of economic partnership with ASEAN on April 14th 2008.For years Japan has made a large investment in ASEAN especially the manufacturing sector, and Japan is the country who provides ASEAN for the most ODA. To ASEAN, after financial crisis, they need money and technology from Japan to revive their economies. And they also hope Japan can pay more attention to them. This paper analyzes the development of economy of China and ASEAN based on the economy and trade between Japan and ASEAN. And I hope I can summarize a serious of purposeful suggestions. This paper is meant to put forward new strategies and new theoretical basis to impel the trade development between our country and ASEAN, through empirical research on and theoretical analysis of the Japanese-ASEAN economic relationships. At the same time, this paper tries to analyze the new trend of trade between Japan and ASEAN, and based on their experience of success and frustrations, to provide corresponding suggestions to our economic policy making. The chapters are arranged as follows:Chapter 1 is general Introduction. The first part mainly introduces the background and significance of selecting the topic. The second part is about the summarization of research at home and abroad. The last part introduces the main content, configuration, creative and inadequate points.Chapter 2 analyses the development of the economic and trade relations between Japan and ASEAN. I briefly review the economic and trade relations between Japan and ASEAN before 2000 in the first section. And in the second section, I analyze the latest development from trade, investment and ODA.Chapter 3 introduces the development of free trade between Japan and ASEAN. Firstly, I separately expound the process that Japan signed EPA with Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippine, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam. Secondly, I introduce the process that Japan singed EPA with ASEAN. Finally, I analyze economic and political significance of AJCEP to Japan and ASEAN.Chapter 4 is about the barriers which happened in the process of signing AJCEP and the countermeasures which Japan took. The first half of this chapter analyzes various obstacles which Japan faced to. The last half summarizes the resolutions. The main thread of this article is the economic and trade relationship between Japan and ASEAN. In the research methods, I use some research at home and abroad for reference. In the research contents, I make some supplement and improvement of previous studies. Because of the limitation of my knowledge and of my data collection, my analysis is neither comprehensive nor precise enough. In the chapter 2,I just analyze in three aspects:trade, investment and ODA. In the chapter 4,I do not introduce all of Japanese solutions either. These drawbacks all affect the depth and breadth of this article. In spite of this, I will never give up. To make my study better, I will keep my research going on.
