In recent years, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical network which use the Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) to route and assign the wavelength has become the most feasible system solution of the wide-area backbone networks. As the maturation of WDM technology, the number of wavelengths in each fiber is increasing, such that the size of OXC and the cost of related control management as well as difficulty are enchanced significantly. However, Waveband Switching (WBS) technology can bring several wavelengths merged in a waveband to be switched by using one port, so it can decrease the number of ports and decrease the cost of network effectively. Meanwhile, as the optical network carrying huge information, any network failure may lead to the huge loss. Therefore, survivability in WBS optical networks is very significant. This thesis mainly investigates the multicast traffic grooming and protection algorithm in WBS optical networks. The chapter one of this thesis describes the development of optical networks and the techonology of multicast and multicast traffic grooming. The chapter two of this thesis introduces the node architecture of WBS optical networks, the techonology of waveband switching, waveband routing and wavelength routing algorithm. The chapter three of this thesis first describes the auxiliary graph for multicast traffic grooming, which includes Virtual Topology Graph, Waveband Layered Graph and Integrated Graph, and then designs two dynamic multicast traffic grooming algorithms, named WBS Joint Multicast grooming Routing Algorithm (JMRA) and WBS Integrated Multicast Grooming Algorithm (IMGA). In order to address the single-link failure problem in WDM optical networks, the chapter four of this thesis designs a protection algorithm named Integrated Multicast grooming Dedicated protection Algorithm (IMDA) in WBS optical networks. For validating and evaluating the performances of designed algorithms, the chapter five makes the simulation and analysis, and also compares the designed algorithms with existed convetional algorithms on the performances of mean blocking probability and mean port-cost. Simulation results show that the designed algorithms not only can obtain lower blocking probability but also can save more port-costs.
