The acquisition of English is often accompanied by the process of error correction. One of the teachers'main tasks is to help the students correct their language errors in order to enhance the accuracy of output. This dissertation presents the related theories of error analysis and error correction to provide a general idea of what the current research is in this field. The error analysis is not so much about error itself as it is focused on the point that learners'errors reflect their learning difficulties and learning strategies in a developmental process. Thus, error treatments could better help learners develop their language competence.Based on the above-mentioned theories and the error treatment methods practised in the teaching of writing such as coded error correction, an experiment is designed to further discover the effectiveness of coded error treatment. After one writing assignment,66 participants are asked to correct their errors on their own without any help. Then, they are randomly divided into 3 groups, each of which will practise an error correction method, including circling and underlining errors, using codes to indicate error types and noting down error numbers and types in the margins. The results have indicated that teachers' feedback is essential in improving the effectiveness of learner correction and the coded error correction proves to be most effective. The two surveys conducted before and after the experiment have also further supported the results of the studyIn conclusion, the study implies that teachers should adopt a moderate approach and diverse error correction strategies to error treatment, which should vary with different students at different learning periods. And the fundamental approach to drastically reducing learners'errors is the extensive input of English. These discoveries play a vital role in improving my English teaching.
