In China, on the theoretical aspect, researches on school-based inquiry of high school teahcers are fruitful. However on the practical field, things are different. Owing to various real obstacles, school-based teacher inquiry is just a cake on the wall, not for tasting but for appreciating. It remains a topic among teachers after work.To bridge the gap between the theoretical aspect and the practical field, effectiveness stands out and focuses this research. Based on the writer's own teaching experience as a senior English teacher, the teaching lives of the English teachers in senior high schools are chosen and inquired.The data of this research are colected by interviewing, attending the activities and by questionaire which show the following problems. Daily activities take up too much time in the meetings of English Teaching Group. The needs for professional support are far more urgent. And the forms of informal communication among collegues and cooperative inquiry are welcomed by the teachers.According to the analysis of the practical problems and the causes lying behind, some options are employed, for instance:adjusting the conception of the school-based inquiry, rebuilding the subject of the inquiry and exciting the high school teachers to master their own professional development, loosening the inflxible ways of the inquiry, bringing forth new ideas in the management of the inquiry, etc.
