Norms In The Translation Of English Animated Feature Film Subtitles

This thesis, taking Toury's descriptive translation studies as its theoretical framework, focuses on animated feature film E-C subtitling. It mainly does descriptive textual comparative and explanatory translation studies on the two translated texts of the Alice in Wonderland mainland Chinese version and Taiwan version.This thesis consists of four chapters including both theoretical discussions and a case study. The introduction part makes an introduction to the research scope, questions, objectives, theoretical framework and expected findings. After taking a brief review on subtitling and children literature translation, it sets English animated feature film subtitling and children literature translation, it sets English animated feature film subtitling in the scope of children literature translation. It demonstrates the methodology and significance of this research as well.Chapter one starts with presenting the development of translational norms theory. It analyses the features and constraints of English animated feature film subtitling. Combined with translational norm theory, it illustrates the translation norms adopted in the film Alice in Wonderland subtitling.Then, chapter Two discusses on norms in two different Chinese versions of the film subtitling. This chapter analyses the influence of preliminary norms and initial norms. It also investigates on how the subtitler adopt operational norms to meet audience expectancy.Afterwards, Chapter three presents the employment of different translational strategies in Alice in Wonderland subtitling, reasons to employ translation strategies in this film subtitling and subtitlers' manipulation and rewriting in its subtitling.In Chapter four, the thesis concludes the aesthetic effects of this film subtitling made on children literature poetics. In such way, it also conveys the contributions the Alice in Wonderland subtitling made on animated feature film subtitling and children literature translation.
