Maxine Hong Kingston is a Chinese American female writer. As a Chinese American woman, she is excluded by American mainstream culture and rejected by Chinese American male writers as well. This position of"double outsider"makes her as if she were living in the two worlds. Her first novel The Woman Warrior---Memoirs of Girlhood among Ghosts has long been paid much attention to in the literary critical circle. Centering on a Chinese American girl's growing-up experiences; it tells stories of the female members in a Chinese American immigrant family in the American society, exhibits the Chinese American women's real life and inner world in the American society. The significance of"ghosts"has been recognized, based on the cultural studies and the Post-colonial Feminism Criticism, the author of this thesis attempts to make a research into the presentation and the causes of"ghosts". The thesis is composed of four parts: Part One is an introduction to the author and her works. It first introduces Maxine Hong Kingston and her major works. Next it presents a survey of the critical reception of the book.Part Two focuses on the analysis of the presentation of"ghosts"using cultural studies. Chinese ghosts represent Chinese traditional culture. American"ghosts"represent American mainstream white culture.Part Three analyses the causes of"ghosts"using Post-colonial Feminism Criticism. Racial discrimination, men's oppression, misunderstanding and alienation between cultures result in"ghosts".Part Four reaches the conclusion:"ghosts"are the voice between the worlds.
