The Liling underglaze wucai (five-colored) porcelain is a great invention in the history of Chinese ceramics. Its unique forms and decorations present a refreshing art style of elegance and reflect the local customs, aesthetics, techniques and cultural connotations. The porcelain has been generally acknowledged as one of the most important representatives of the Chinese porcelain in modern and contemporary times. The essay focuses on the following aspects of paintings on the wucai porcelain, artistic characteristics, decorative language and unique decorative styles.By making a detailed summary of the artistic styles of the paintings on the Liling underglaze wucai porcelain, the essay focuses upon a comprehensive analysis of the three reasons influencing the artistic styles of the paintings on the Liling porcelains, i.e: the selective references of the stylized painting techniques of the Chinese ink and water paintings, the inheritance of the stylized painting techniques by local potters and their aesthetical preferences. The author has tried to give a reasonable interpretation of the historical reasons, cultural background and the contemporary aesthetical directions under the growing influences of contemporary ceramic art.
