It is quite important to evaluate anticoagulant activities of heparin or heparin-like agents before their applications. As a member of mucopolysaccharide with anticoagulant function, heparin contains numerous anion groups, such as carboxyl and sulfonic groups, which makes heparin a strongly anionic polysaccharide and could form complexes with cationic molecules, for example, sodium ion.Heparin or heparin-like agents have several biological functions, and most of them could be evaluated by bio-assays. However, its anticoagulant activities and effects can not be convenient to be evaluated by those bio-assays, which are usually expensive and time-consuming, and are unsuitable for real-time evaluating anticoagulant abilities of heparin or heparin-like materials. This paper is to develop a simple and cheap method for rapid and effective evaluating anticoagulant activities of heparin-like biomaterials including chemically modified agarose, carrageenan. We determined the anticoagulant activity of heparin-like biomaterials by dual wavelength ultraviolet spectrophotometry and microscopic examination. The cost and the degree of accuracy of the method of anticoagulant activity test were evaluated. The anticoagulant activity of the heparin-like materials was used to test the feasibility of the method. The results showed that the evaluation method of anticoagulant activity with microscopic examination of erythrocytes morphology and dual wavelength ultraviolet spectrophotometry was a rapid and high-efficient method which could be used to evaluate anticoagulant abilities of heparin-like materials and to monitor manufacture of anticoagulant blood collection tubes.
