Due to the extremely low internal structural damping and large flexible, the stay cables are prone to wind-induced vibration, wind-rain-induced vibration, or vibration caused by the motion of either bridge decks or towers. The vibrations can make damage to the cables or cause severely sudden accidents. At present, it has been an active research topic for vibration control of stay cables in long span cable-stayed bridges in the field of bridge engineering. Dampers installed with the long stay cable at bottom anchor may add sufficient damping to eliminate the vibration without significantly changing the aesthetics of the bridges.Because of the flexibility of the stay cables, the interaction between the damper and the stay cable takes place during the vibration of the stay cable. This interaction may change the dynamic characteristic of the damper. Some experimental investigations are conducted to study the interaction between the damper and the stay cable .The main investigations of this paper include the following parts:Firstly, the dynamical performances of five dampers are tested and the experimental results are analyzed. According to the experimental results, the optimum model parameters of viscous damper and MR damper are got respectively. The comparisons between the fitted results and the experimental results are analyzed.Subsequently, the experimental investigations of the springs attached with the dampers are designed and carried out. The experimental results are compared with the dynamical performance test of the dampers and the influences of the spring's rigidity to the force-displacement curve of the series system are analyzed. The model of the series system are built and the comparisons between the theoretically computational results and the experimental results are analyzed.Finally, the passive control experimental investigations of the stay cable/viscous damper system with a small viscous damper attached to the two different places of the stay cable model are carried out and the experimental results are analyzed with the control effect comparisons between the two different positions of the viscous damper attached to the stay cable model. The experimental phenomena of the interaction between the damper and the stay cable are compared and analyzed.
