Superior power density, high performance motion control with fast speed, and better accuracy, have made permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSM) being increasingly used as actuators in various automation control fields, such as X-Y driving devices, robots, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, levitated transportation, high speed injection modeling machine. This paper aims to develop a kind of control system to drive PMLSM.The space vector pulse width modulation technology (SVPWM) has been selected as the main control strategy to develop the test and control system in this paper. Based on Matlab/Simulink, both open-loop and closed-loop control systems have been developed, with the related simulation results showing the feasibility and rationality of the selected control strategy, and also forming an important theoretical base and a control strategy for the development of practical PMLSM control systems.To practically develop a PMLSM test and control system, this paper has proposed an innovative SVPWM signal generation scheme by virtual instrument (VI) and related DAQ devices, with the programming and implementing of SVPWM signals carried out in the work. This innovation scheme has a number of unique advantages comparing to the implementation schemes by DSP technology. Using the developed SVPWM signal source, this work successfully developed an open-loop control system for PMLSM.In order to further improve the control accuracy, two sets of closed-loop test and control systems have also been developed in the work. One is based on displacement feedback control (PF), and the other is based on field oriented vector control (VC). This paper introduces the developing flow and method in detail. The hardware and software designs of the test systems include rotor displacement test, rotor speed test, rotor acceleration test, electromagnetic thrust force test, and stator three-phase current test.Finally, the related experiments have been conducted to check the control performance of developed test and control system. The test results of PF-based and VC-based closed-loop test and control systems are discussed in detail in this paper. The experimental results verify the feasibility and practicability of the VI based test and control scheme for PMLSM. In addition, the experimental tests with regard to the precision of displacement and dynamic characteristic of speed control, have been carried out and analyzed in the work.The above theory and simulation analysis with experimental result obtained have also formed a solid research foundation for the further development of higher performance test and control system for PMLSM.
