Ultrasonic testing is one of the most important non-destructive testing techniques, widely used in various fields of industrial production. Particularly in the field of nuclear materials detection, ultrasonic testing is the dominant one because of the special nature of the object to be detected.With the characteristics of high speed, high precision, security process, automatic ultrasonic testing is gradually replacing traditional ultrasonic testing.Aimed at the development trend, based on ultrasonic testing theory, and for the purpose of practical engineering applications, the testing requirements were analyzed in this paper. With automatic control technology and digital signal processing technology, a set of automated ultrasonic inspection system that used to test the small nuclear spherical shell has been designed and accomplished in the paper too.Ultrasonic testing technology and its development are described firstly in this paper followed by the background and research significance. Then the system modeling processing including the selection of testing method and kinematics modeling are analyzed behind. After this, the overall design and detailed design of the system, especially the motion control module and data acquisition and processing module are described in detail. And the design of some data processing algorithms and motion control algorithms are finished in this port. At the end of the paper, system test results are given with some result comparison of different algorithms.The results show that: this automatic ultrasonic testing system can accurately determine whether there are defects in the specimen, and where they are.Currently the detection system has been put into actual production, and was well received because of the correct results and system stability.
