The theodolite is one of the three conventional measuring instruments. It is the major accuracy angular measuring instrument which can measure horizontal and elevating angles. The conventional optical measuring instruments wholly based on the designs of optical systems and mechanical structures are unsuitable for the current digital times. So it is valuable to improve the theodolite to digital instrument.A digital theodolite is developed, which is in the project cooperated with the Nanjing Surveying Instrument Factory. Besides the original function of the DZJ2 type electronic theodolite, the CCD and DSP technology are used to reconstruct the next generation electronic theodolite which has the function of digital image showing and data processing.The common electronic theodolite is improved in this paper. A CCD collection chips is appended on the rear of the Telescope. Moreover, a DSP imaging processing system is used to transport the photonics signal to DSP and add it to the signal collected by CCD, as well as show it in real time. This Theodolite can store a frame and compress it to JPEG files. Due to the CCD and LCD, the small viewing window of ocular and the convertion of image are evaded, as a result, the measurement becomes convenient and quickly.The research about the project of electrical theodolite is introduced. And the hardware architecture of the image collection system is presented. While the emphasis of this paper is the software design based on DSP.
