This paper discusses our designing of a delay through bulkhead initiator to form a complete set in a development of a new type of weapon. By making use of research results and test methods in detonation physics through a large number of experiments, we have studied the relationships between the detonation energy and the variety, mass and density of the donor explosives, the relationships between the propagation and attenuation of the shock wave traveling in the metal bulkhead and the material and thickness of the bulkhead. and the relationships between the detonation shock sensitivity and the type, mass and density of the acceptor explosive. With the high-degree accuracy property of a dispersing-type thick three-core delay cord of the silicon-based delay composition and the delay precision testing method, we have studied the relationship between its charging structure and its delay precision and in this foundation we have designed the initiator. The design has met the technical requirements proposed by the user and requirements of the new type of weapon to form a complete set. Joining up with the practical application of the engineering design of the through bulkhead initiator, we have discussed its design methods and give a general design criterion which lays the certain technology base for designing a series of similar products.
