In this paper, shale ceramsite are used to replace crushed stone in asphalt concrete paving the road surface. Ceramsite asphalt concrete have the general advantages like smooth traffic,comfortable,low noise, easy maintenance and renewable that the general asphalt concrete have,in addition to having the special advantages like light weight, lower noise, slow cooling during paving and roller compaction, low elastic modulus, wearable anti-slide, increasing the density of asphalt concrete as well as reduceing the dust during mixing process and thus more environmentally-friendly Etc.Therefore, the ceramsite asphalt concrete have a more ideal application in bridge paving, old bridge transformation and tunnel paving and so on.In this paper, the experimention of water absorption , apparent density, bulk density ,raw materials gradation and other performance of shale ceramsite, gravel, sand and other raw materials have been done. On this basis,the mixture ratio has been designed in accordance with the requirements of the test road.Considering the characteristic of the light weight and the uniform size of shale ceramsite, it is used to replace crushed stone whose diameter between 10mm~20mm equal volume.A gradation design method of ceramsite asphalt concrete has been given on the basis of equal volume replace. The best amount of asphalt that has been given is 5.2 % by indoor Marshall experimention.The water stability, high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance and anti-split performance is evaluated by indoor water Marshall experimention, track experimention, low-temperature crack resistance experimention and Anti- splitting of ceramsite asphalt concrete.The test road scheme is made according to the characteristics of ceramsite asphalt concrete and the distribution of the raw materials of test road . The requirements of performance of all the aggregate and asphalt that test road required are given. Production mixture ratio is given on construction site on the basis of indoor mixture ratio.Some specific suggestion are given on mixing ,transport , roller compaction etc the ceramsite asphalt concrete .After the test road opening traffic , it is needed to test the degree of compaction and flatness, deflection, structural depth and sound-absorbing properties of the test road regular. Detecting the performances on paving the road surface by compared the performance of general asphalt concrete and ceramsite asphalt concrete.An analysis on economic performance of ceramsite asphalt concrete is made and the cost of the two kinds of asphalt concreate are compared.The results of experimention in laboratory and test road show that the performances of ceramsite asphalt concrete after proper treated meet the requirement of ceramsite asphalt concrete on coarse aggregate. Ceramsite increas the shear strength and wear-resistant of asphalt concrete and reduce impact and vibration of passing vehicles. The mixture ratio design ,mixing,and construction technology of ceramsite asphalt concrete is similar to the asphalt concrete.The comprehensive results of Marshall test showed that the performances of ceramsit asphalt concrete are better when the ratio between asphalt and crushed stone is 5.2%,but the density of ceramsit asphalt concrete is 20% lighter than asphalt concrete.The durability, anti-fatigue, etc.of ceramsite asphalt concrete need further study for the restrictions of time, technique and experimentation condition.
