This paper mainly carries on the analysis and the forecast research on the application of the use of jacket in the Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding-Sabot (APFSDS, long rod penetrator) ammunition with high aspect ratios. Numerical analysis of a jacketed penetrator's structural strength and vibration characteristics has been conducted. From two aspects of applied jacket materials and structure design, jacketed penetrator's application prospects have been studied. This paper studies on a long jacketed-rod penetrator with its length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) equaling to 40. According to its geometry, structural characteristics and force features, a 2D axisymmetric finite element model of the jacketed penetrator and a 3D vibration analysis model have been established to check its in-bore structural integrity and its vibration performance. Using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software, the integrity calculation results, such as stress and strain distributions and its variation law in the full projectile, have been obtained. Modal analysis verifies that the vibration during in-bore acceleration and free-flight has influences on projectile's dynamic structure strength. This paper comparatively analyzes the stress distributions in the projectiles with steel jacket and aluminum jacket. Furthermore, starting with different jacket structure parameters, such as location and thickness, different jacketed penetrators' dynamic stress distributions and modal shapes have been obtained. All this work has done some profitable explorations in the application of jacket in long rod penetrators with large aspect ratios.
