As a vehicle of culture, the architecture is a reconstruction and summary of the history. A life without the sense of history seems rootless, just a life in chaos and blankness. The resonance of history summons people to get rid of the limitation of reinforced concrete, making people retrieve the roots of their lives from the cultural symbols in the classical thoughts, and letting modern designs to absorb the spiritual essence of traditional residences, thus arousing the authentic source of the modern life.On entering three lanes and seven alleys, seeing all the ancient buildings, and appreciating the scenes that had witnessed all their glories, you can easily imagine the spectacular sights in the past and sense the highlight of China's traditional residential architectures: the harmony between the human and the architecture, the harmony between the architecture and the architecture group, and the harmony between the architecture group and its surroundings. They emphasized the communication among humans, the harmony between human's life and architectural styles, the harmony between people living in it with its surroundings. However, we are now facing such a plight: traditional residences were thought highly of by specialists, but they are now gradually perishing. New residences are emerging everywhere, with only uniform and dull appearances. Such sharp differences, plus their different destinies, are really pitiful. While trying to protect traditional residences, we should still consider their impact on the design of modern living environment. China' s traditional residences are in diversified forms, with full varieties in layouts. That' s of high value in reference for today' s indoor and outdoor architectural environment design. However, the mode of living architectures after long-term historical evolution and cultural accumulation will inevitably have the mark of the ancient times, conflicting with people' s real life, so we should hold a dialectic attitude toward such a phenomenon. Based on investigations into three lanes and seven alleys, this thesis unfolds some discussions to analyze this point. The thesis bears such a framework:Chapter 1, the introduction, raises the issue for research, illustrates the content and means of topic research, and points out the purpose and meaning of the topic research.Chapter 2 detailed introduces the historical and current situations of three lanes and seven alleys, offering reliable theoretical materials to the research.Chapter 3 is the nuclear part of this research, intended to describe how modern living environments inherit the traditional residential modes by taking three lanes and seven alleys for example, in the three aspects of living environment, decoration arts and living-adapted modes.Chapter 4 summarizes the research in this thesis and expounds the combination between traditional culture and modern designs, as well as the wish of the author.
