The development of national economy in China has led to a rapid increment of pubic road transportation. As a consequence, there have been growing demands for enhanced load classifications and driving conditions. Due to the increasing workload for public roads and bridges, together with the existing problems in design, construction and structural aging, the bridges in operation have frequently appeared to be in problems. Their supporting capacity dropped, the conditions of the existing bridges have drawn increasing attentions. To solve this problem, we need to conduct comprehensive examination on the existing bridges, evaluating their structural damage situations and drawing up follow-up plans.Taking the Zhangzhen bridge in Shangyu city of Zhejiang province as an example, this thesis studies and discusses the examination, evaluation and consolidation of the bridge. It mainly involves the following contents:1. Examining the location of the old bridge, gaining comprehensive, detailed and in-depth understanding of the current technical condition of the bridge, fully examining the bridge and analyzing all kinds of damages.2. According to the current design guidelines and standards, proposing key elements in the design and research of the consolidation of the old bridge.3. Establishing mathematic models for the construction process of stayed cable replacement, calculating and analyzing the changing holding capacity of the structure during the replacement, and proposing applicable construction plans based on the calculation results.4. Discussing major construction techniques and methods for consolidation and maintenance, the operation requirements, and important issues and suggestions that deserve attention during the construction process.
