The accelerator driven subcritical reactor system (ADS) is a coupling system of a high power proton accelerator and a subcritical reactor, offering a promising solution for reducing the amount of high-level radioactive waste to be disposed. The beam window is one of the most crucial components in a liquid metal target of ADS. It is a challenge to cool down the beam window sufficiently due to its high heat load.Fundamental studies concerning the target design have already been carried out at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The main objectives of this master are to investigate the flow behavior in the target systems, especially around the beam window, to make contribution to the design optimization of the target systems, and to provide a data base for code validation.Experiments were performed in a 2-D full-scale model test section of the proposed ADS target window design, using water as the working fluid. The flow patterns around the simulated target beam window for both upward flow and downward flow were visualized by laser light sheet and recorded with charge-coupled device (CCD) camera.Numerical simulations of fluid flow were performed by using CFX code for the proposed spallation target of ADS. Results are presented for the ADS target under both upward and downward flow, and for the target with different diffuser plates under downward flow. This master's thesis summaries the results of the hydraulic study of the proposed ADS window target design.
