The prosperity of an enterprise is decided by the competitiveness of its products. Anenterprise can hardly survive without competitiveness which significantly depends on thereliability of its products. Reliability engineering is a relatively recent discipline, gearedto the demands of the new development in science and technology. Nowadays, due to therapid progress in modern science and technology, the products have become increasinglyfunctional and complex, which brings particular prominence to the product reliabilityissue. Reliability has become one of the most important yardsticks for the quality andoverall performance of the products as it does not only reflect the quality of the productsbut also represents the safety and maintenance Performance of the products. Therefore, the enhancement in reliability exerts a great impact on improving the competitiveness ofthe products in the market. This paper starts from analyzing the reliability of the complex system products basedon the general reliability theory. By analyzing, comparing and summarizing the featuresof a typical reliability model, it further illustrates the principles and main procedures toestablish a model and brings forward a model with the capacity to analyze the reliabilityof all types of complex systems. It also introduces the methods with specific examples foranalyzing and calculating the reliability of complex systems including the use of BooleanTheorem, Total Probability Formula, Minimal Path Sets and Minimal Cut Sets. Severaltheories and methods of reliability design which are commonly used in the projects suchas Tolerance Design, EMC design, Thermal Design, Design of Reducing Rating andRedundancy Design are introduced afterwards. This paper focuses on the concepts andmethods for the predication and apportionment of reliability with instances.
