Quanzhou is the famous historial and cultural city of China. During more than 1200 years' development, Quanzhou city experience a city of border area, local political and economic center, nationwide floating trade seaport, finally turn into a frontier city of coast defence. The city form grows and continues its characteristic with the city's great changes. It is a typical instance in the history of traditional Chinese local city development. Based on the chorography of Ming Dynasty or Qing Dynasty, the historical materials of Republic of China, existent objects, this thesis chooses the period of Ming and Qing as the base point. By systemically and academically studying on the city form of Quanzhou, ferreting the evolving mechanism, expatiating the evolutive course and analyzing the regularity and reality of it, the thesis would help to direct and induce people to understand the traditional Quanzhou city well and truly, and then supply reference to the work of preserving and rehabilitating the cities, thus maintain the special structure and the vernacular space of the old city.This thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter I explains the context and meaning of the subject selection, the object and content of the study, raises the methods and thesis's frame, summarizes the domestic relevant study. Chapter II discusses and concludes the evolution and background of ancient Quanzhou city in different periods, the ideas of the election of settlements, the characteristics of environments. Chapter III focuses on the historic cause of formation in Quanzhou of Ming and Qing, differentiates and analyses the origin, development, evolvement, of Quanzhou's "Cheng" and "Guo". Then studying...
