In the field of underwater acoustic communications, one of the main obstacles is the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by the multi-path effect. Channel equalization technique is an effective way to combat ISI. Unlike traditional adaptive equalization using training signals which reduce the available band efficiency and data transmission rate, blind equalization can effectively increase both the communication speed and reliability without the aid of any training sequence. Therefore, this thesis investigates application of blind equalization technique in high speed underwater acoustic communication.This thesis, on the basis of analyzing the characteristic of underwater acoustic channel and the performance of underwater acoustic communication system, has set up three kinds of underwater acoustic channel models. Then a few of blind equalization algorithms that are broadly used are investigated. These equalizers' structures and principles are introduced in detail. The convergence properties of these equalizers applying in certain underwater acoustic channels are analyzed mathematically by computer simulations. The computer simulations provide satisfaction results. At the same time, one simple underwater acoustic communication system has been established based on the thought of virtual instrument, and anechoic water tank trails have carried out further verification for blind equalization algorithm.
