The establishment and development of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is the trend of 21st century urban traffic. It is a completely new way of solving traffic problem, so it has developed quickly both at home and abroad. Vehicle navigation system is an important part of ITS. It is also one of the hotspots in ITS application. It is a hotspot and difficulty to provide travelers with road traffic status information and dynamic route guidance by making use of vehicle navigation system. This thesis first introduces GPS,GIS and their application in vehicle navigation system. The automatic identification system of road traffic status based on GPS/GIS is designed and simulated. The thesis is composed of following parts.Firstly, present vehicle navigation system is introduced including its components, functions and shortcomings. Floating car applied system based on GPS/GIS is analyzed in the thesis.Secondly, the identification algorithms of road traffic status are studied including methods of determining floating car sample sizes which are based on"the relationship between floating car sample sizes and accuracy of traffic information detection"and"the relationship between floating car sample sizes and requirement of road network information detection". The road traffic identification algorithm grounded on the journey-time is analyzed. Besides, road traffic identification algorithm based on average speed is put forward and the validity of these two methods is analyzed in the thesis.Finally, automatic identification system of real time traffic status is designed and established. Flow of GIS electronic map is analyzed. Because of shortcomings in current monitor terminal system, simulation system of urban road traffic status identification is established. Functions including static optimal path selection, automatic identification of real time traffic status and dynamic optimal path selection based on real time traffic status are designed. Besides, it is simulated on the urban traffic simulation system using analog data.
