Under certain temperature and pressure, fiber metal laminates are solidified by using metal sheet and fiber layer alternately. FMLs (fiber metal laminates) exhibit a mixture of the characteristics of both metals and composite materials, and overcome the disadvantage of both metals and composite materials;The FMLs , not only have the high specific strength and specific rigid, but also have good toughness and machining as the metals have. Especially, the most advantage of FMLs is that it has excellent fatigue and impact. Although FMLs have been used successfully out of our country, few people have studied the FMLs in our country.The thermoplastic Fibre-Metal Laminates are fit for volume-produce, because of their improved toughness, especially fitting for forming and recycling. The forming ability of two kinds of thermoplastic Fibre-Metal Laminates(Al-Twintex and Al-Curv) have been researched through experiments and FEM.First, forming characteristics of these two kinds of FMLs have studied through special experiments. The mechanical properties of FMLs under room temperature were carried out and the tensile experimental results showed that the two kinds of FMLs had the excellent mechanical properties comparable to aluminium , they were fit to be formed;the results of bend test and stamping test under different of pre-heating temperature showed that temperature affected the forming characteristics of these FMLs evidently;the results of stamping under room temperature showed that the FMLs were not fitting for one-off stamping deeply .On the base of special experiments, the Elastic-plastic of FEM models of stamping are built. The Spatial displacement of the stamping, Stress, Equivalent strain, Contact pressure and Frictional are analyzed, and the stamping of FEM is compared with experimental values. The results of comparison showed that the stamping of FEM got the same Forming characteristics as the results of special experiments showed.The methods and results of this paper were helpful in studying the forming of these two kings of FMLs both in experiments and in method of FEM.
