In recent years, China has experienced a rapid economical development, urbanization, and population growth. The urban development and renewal have become an unchangeable trend. However, because of our long history and long-time war in modern times, a great many of old cities has been seriously ruined and declined. The infrastructure construction cannot meet the demand of economical development. More and more village people have immigrated into cities, which lead to a serious shortage of urban land. Thus, Urban renewal and development seems more and more urgent and important for most big cites.Every city and the buildings in it have been the crystallization of culture and history, and the historical buildings are the best symbol of the city spirit and human civilization. The districts, which are closer to the center of cities, usually have more precious historical heritages existing. Along with the large-scale urban renewal and development, a lot of historical buildings were destroyed or even demolished, thus the conservation of historical heritages has become more and more necessary.This paper has firstly analyzed the urban renewal in China, and the major methods of performing the urban renewal. Then, having a full research of the conservation of historical heritages both in China and in western countries. In the finality, taking Shanghai's urban renewal and heritage conservation as a target, and find out a practical way of protecting the heritage buildings in urban renewal.
