The infrared low-attitude early-warning system, which uses the passive mode to detect the target, can resist the Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI). This system can greatly improve the nights fighting ability of the aerial defend army. The infrared target tracking system, which this article mainly research on, is one part of this system. According to the characters of the infrared target and the background figure, kinds of infrared target tracking algorithms are studied, and the suitable ones are selected. The principles and methods of the infrared target tracking are researched. The infrared target tracking system's project is put forward, and the real-time processor is designed. The advantages and the disadvantages of the selected algorithms are compared when putting them into practice, and a new algorithm is proposed to fit the hardware. This algorithm combines the centroid algorithm and the inter-frame difference algorithm, and is modularized into several blocks. The experiment result shows that the infrared target tracking system can work efficiently and satisfies the whole system's initial requests. Meanwhile, the merge and displace of the high frame frequency image is also discussed. According to the characters of the image, a method of image merge is given, which is more suitable for the hardware. The experiment shows that the method is effective and can meet the requirement of the project.
