Because of the separable resource and receiver, multistatic sonar has many special character in underwater target detection and localization. At present, the research of multistatic sonar has been taken as an important thing. In this paper, an intensive study of key techniques of the multistatic sonar have been carried out from the point of multistatic geometry. The bistatic sonar localization of underwater target has been thoroughly studied. The main contributions of this paper are summarized as follows:1. The sonar equations of bistatic sonar are developed from an energy point of view. The meaning of the parametric and the effects of the parametric on sonar equations have been studied. This paper also describes the localization error with Geometrical Dilution of Precision (GDOP).2. Aiming at the problem of underwater object location in bistatic sonar, the paper discussed six basic location methods and an optimized method of two-dimensional. The performances of four algorithms are evaluated via computer simulations. The geometrical distribution of errors have also been given. Moreover, the accuracy analysis for different measurements and parameters (such as time measure error, azimuth measure error, buoys error, baseline length and sound velocity fluctuate) are given respectively. To make the best of the observation datas, the weigh least square localization algorithm is used by improved the accuracy in bistatic sonar. The simulation results show that the accuracy of position location is higher than the other four algorithms. This algorithm can improve the accuracy of position location in stations areas and side areas effectively.3. Four algorithms of position location in three-dimensional are discussed when three measurements can be used. The position location accuracy contours are drawn to evaluate the location performance via computer simulation. The accuracy analysis for different measurements and parameters are given respectively. The simulation resultsshow that the accuracy of position location is influenced by azimuth error greatly. In practice, it can get much better positioning performance to improve azimuth accuracy. Comparing with it in two-dimensional, the position location accuracy in three-dimensional is lower. It is because that the height error is used.4. Extending the method of position location in bistatic sonar to the study of multistatic sonar, the algorithm which used distance datas has been discussed. Besides, the paper analysised the geometrical distribution of error which in different stations layout and presented the best precept of stations position.
