Mini unmanned helicopter has comprehensive applications in military and civilian, and for a long time to now, its been as the study object for many institutions and organizations all over the world. Landmark recognition system is a very important part of Mini unmanned helicopter. It detects landmark, and supplies the navigation computer with location information of the landmark. Functionally, a landmark recognition system contains the following processes: the obtaining of digital video flowing, character extraction and image identification. However, the varied background and the moving of the camera make the image processing become difficult.Based on existing technology in image identification, this thesis describes a real-time landmark recognition system for Mini unmanned helicopter. First of all, how to establish the hardware platform is discussed. Then the thesis introduces a solution which based on DirectShow on implementing the real-time video capture problem. Third, an object detection algorithm based on Haar-like features and cascade classifier is described. In the end, the experimental results show the system effectiveness.
