In the convergence zone of the estuary and the ocean, there always exists the bar shoal which has become an obstacle to navigation for the large-scale vessels in seaward channel. Since the first half of the 19th century, international trade and maritime shipping have witnessed tremendous advances with the rapid development of global economy .In order to increase the channel depth, enhance the channel capacity and improve its safety conditions, countries all over the world have taken all kinds of engineering measures on the regulation of the bar shoal. Over the past 100 years, the practice of engineering has showed that many countries have succeeded in regulating the bar shoal and have gained much precious experience. The Yangtze River estuary is a large heavily sediment-laden estuary where the bar shoal with dozens of kilometers in length is formed due to its unique feature of water-sediment movement. After decades of study, the northern channel is chosen to be a deep channel to the sea, while the regulatory principle of widening and dredging as well as the general scheme are determined. An analysis and summary of the technological problems has been given in this paper over the first stage project of the construction on Sw in the deep channel of the Yangtze river estuary. These problems include the optimization of the design scheme ,the research on the special ships and machines, the layout of GPS control network, the construction technique of breakwater structure and the development of bathyorographic measurement system without tide observation. The dynamic monitoring and management of the engineering as well as the effects of the 1st phase of the project have also been discussed.
