Passenger Travel Time Saving Value

Time, which is valuable, is a kind of resource as well. Passenger's journey takes time; therefore, it concerns the issue of time value. Time journey can be long or short, the saving in passengers' travel-time saves value for passengers.Value of travel-time can be divided into value of resources and value of actions. The resource value of travel-time represents the one of evaluating time from the perspective of society, which is mainly utilized for the evaluation of traffic project's investment; however the action value of travel-time, a kind of value displayed through passenger's choice of certain travel mode, is a kind of perceptible value due to traffic projects' effect on individuals. It is revealed through the analysis of passengers' actions and can be applied to the analysis and predictions of travel-flow. Since travel-time and travel actions are closely related to a variety of economic and non-economic factors, they are difficult to calculate. Research at home and abroad sees little progress in this field.Firstly, this thesis makes a definition of the value of travel-time's saving (VTTS) and distinguishes it from the value of time familiar to us. Secondly, this thesis makes an analysis of the influential factors on the value of time's saving. VTTS varies greatly with individuals and conditions, which is influenced by personal income, aim of travel, distance of travel, modes of travel, time of travel, quality of travel's service, type of passengers and regions of travel, etc. The estimating methods of VTTS may be divided into two types, one of which is direct estimating method including the method of production, the method of income, the method of cost, the method of income & cost, the method of production & cost; the other of which is indirect estimating method including the analyzing method through displaying preference and the analyzing method through stating preference. Thirdly, this thesis deals with the choice of travel modes from the viewpoint of supply and need. Fourthly, this thesis discusses the calculating theories and methods of VTTS. Finally, this thesis puts forward several proposals for theinvestment and construction of traffic projects from viewpoints concerned.
