After the research on the actuality and problem of our country's lakes and reservoirs, the research fruit of lake hydrodynamic numerical simulation from external has been introduced. The developed history of environment mathematics model and the model software in common use has been expound. A detailed introduction about MIKE3 model's main equations, difference approximations, numerical formulation and bottom-fitted approach is given.MIKE3 has a better function of data treatment, the import of data is convenient and rapid. It can work in with Microsoft word and excel better. This function can reduce the burthen of pre-work.MIKE3 three-dimensional hydrodynamic model has been made on this article along with the following two problems: 3D simulation of temperature field on outfall of Xiangtan power plant and 3D simulation of velocity fields and temperature fields on Wanjiazhai reservoir. The first simulation show the good construction of the water, and the temperature field is accordant with the result of real measure. From the second simulation, it is show that the Wanjiazhai reservoir is a typical layered reservoir, it keep the layered construction all the year. The temperature construction of the reservoir is influent by the discharge from the upriver.The two case studies of applications demonstrated the effectiveness of both the model and computational method successfully. MIKE3 has better practical value on this problem.
