Design activity is one of key points in the products development procedure, while conceptual design is most important in design activity. This is because the basic features and mainframe of products are determined in the conceptual design phase, and the tasks of follow-up steps are only to substantiate and embody these design concepts. With the severe competition of products in 21st century, traditional design methods and procedures cannot meet well the demands of modern products development, this trend leads to the combination of modern engineering design with conceptual design theory and artificial intelligence techniques.This paper focuses on conceptual design of systems dealing with energy transition. The aim of the present work is to generate and provide various energy transition system alternatives of a product by reusing previous design concepts in the existing design cases. In this paper, we describe common methods and principles of conceptual design and energy transition function design, discuss the knowledge modeling and representation, study the application of product gene theory in energy transition function conceptual design, use heuristic method to search project on energy transition system, and also introduce the establishment of intelligence support conceptual design system.The paper consists of six chapters. The first one is the introduction, which analyzes the current situation and trend in case-base reasoning , design catalog, product gene and function reasoning, sets forth the meaning and aim of present work. The second one introduces the related concepts about design catalog and the proper procedure, studies energy carrier item and evaluation of principle solution in design catalog, perfects the global structure of design catalog expressing energy transition product, establishes the knowledge base of principle solutions. The third chapter introduces the universal function expression model based on eigenvector to describe energy transition products, discusses the product gene knowledge in the concept design, brings forward product gene model of energy transition products and product gene group, establishes the knowledge base of product genes. The fourth chapter proposes a heuristic approach based on product genes for principle conceptual design of energy transforming systems, which is demonstrated valid by an illustrative example. The fifth one introduces computer-aided energy transition function conceptual design prototype system, including the global structure of prototype system, every functional module, operation interface and application. And the sixth one is the conclusion of the whole paper, at the same time gives suggestions for the future.
