Since the Reform, China has achieved great improvement on planning and design of urban housing. However, we have to update our strategy and implementation in the new period to catch up with the ever-changing society.Wuqiao Community project originates from Wenzhou's urban renewal. It is a typical case in the contemporary urban housing construction in China and it is based on the initiative in favor of inhabitants and sustainability. The following points has been explored and pursued in the process of planning and design: consistence with the whole urban environment; efficient and sustainable use of resource such as use of renewable resource; protection of existing environment; adaptability which makes residences function well as long as the structure is sound; combination of the each household's privacy and easy access to communal space which is supposed to contribute to a quality community atmosphere; emphasis on geographic, historical and cultural characters of Wenzhou Region and application of steel structure in residential construction.
