~j~peflor Performing Asphalt Pavement (Superpave) is the end products in area of asphalt and mix after the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) have been finished. It could be considered as one of the most important invention in recent decades. Although the Superpave system is mainly used in dense grade mix, which also could be applied in SMA, OGFC or other special purpose mix and evaluated the effects of modifiers. The system entirely based on road performance, so it could improve the performance through controlling the rutting, fatigue crack and temperature crack while considering the aging, moisture-induced damage. The paper sets about the key of system gyratory compaction. Firstly, reviewing the advantages and disadvantages between the Superpave and Marshall system and analyzing the principle of gyratory compaction, the non-material factors. Secondly, carrying out the parallel tests with the selected materials, probing into some subjects such as the volume characteristic, the slope of compaction curve, the area below the compaction curve, construction energy index and traffic densification index. Thirdly, discussing the relationship between the shear stress and compaction temperature and introducing the new-generated compactor HIPAC (Hot Iron Process Asphalt Compaction) overseas. At last, simply evaluating the economic value.
