With the development of highway transportation and urban road construction, the noise pollution generated by traffic is a significant and growing problem. Sound barrier, a effective and comparatively inexpensive measure of reducing noise levels, will be developed to some degree. It will do much benefit to the living quality of the residents along the road if we can take good advantage of its technical property. In this paper, the author first deduces a formula on theory to calculate the insertion loss of the lateral sound barrier. In order to make it match the practice, the formula is updated according to the measuring data. Based on the updated formula, the minimum lateral extended length of different IL is put forward. Account to the status of our economic situation and the common noise excess, the criterion of part noise sensitive area is depressed. Thus the minimum length of sound barrier can be determined. The paper also discusses the ways to lower the length of the sound barrier.
