Today, machining centers have been extensively used in manufacturing industry. Study of the develop of machining centers has been one of the focuses in design area.Now a great lot of persons with ability of machining centers are in dire need of. But the school has no proper equipment for bring up the persons with ability of machining center which has become the key problem now. The machining center VMC40 is the solution of the problem. The thesis is completed based on the author's research work of one of the Tackling Key Problems in Science and Technology of Henan Province which aims at developing a kind of machining centers which have numerous functions and are able to machine some precise and complex parts and their cost is low.In this thesis, the development of the machining center VMC40 is thoroughly analyzed. Firstly, the structure alternative of the machining center is proposed. During the process of design the feed system of the machine, the ball screw assemblies and the scroll guides are chosen based on the corresponding calculation, and the model of the servo motors of the servo feed system is designed. Based on the system designed above, the mathematical model of the feed system is constructed and the performances of the system is analyzed. To improve the performance of the feed system, PID controller is designed in the end. Experiments has shown that the application of the PID controller has greatly improved the performance of machining center VMC40.Now the machining center has being successfully used in real production and teaching practice.
