In this paper , four azo dyes and their nine metal chelates have been synthesized under low temperature(-10-0℃) by diazotization reaction and azo coupling reaction. Those are 2-[2-(thiazole)azo]-5-N,N-dimethyl aminophenol(AZO-1) and its zinc chelate (AZO-1-Zn),2-[2-(4,5-dimethyl- thiazole)azo]-5-N,N-dimethyl aminophenol(AZO-2)and its cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc chelates (AZO-2-Co,AZO-2-Ni,AZO-2-Cu ,AZO-2-Zn),2-[2-(4-methylthiazole)azo]-5-N,N-dimethyl aminophenol(AZO-3)and its zinc chelate (AZO-3-Zn),2-[2-(benzothiazole)azo]-5-N,N-dimethyl aminophenol(AZO-5)and its cobalt, nickel, zinc chelates (AZO-5-Co, AZO-5-Ni,AZO-5-Zn). A diazole material, 2,5-diazolythiazole-2-(5-N,N-dimethyl aminophenol)(AZO-4) has also been synthesized. Except AZO-1, these compounds have not been reported up to date. They are confirmed by element analysis, ESI-MS spectrum, 1HNMR spectra, UV-Vis spectra and infrared spectrum. The solubility, electronic absorption of the compounds in some different solvents, such as N,N-dimethyl formamide, methanol, acetone, et al. were tested. The effects of substitute groups, central metal ions on the electronic absorption spectra and IR spectra have been studied. The thermal analysis for the complexes are done with TG/DSC, the thermal decomposition mechanisms of different complexes are discussed. The third order nonlinear optical properties of these materials were studied by Z-scan technique using 130fs laser pulses at 800nm, and the third order nonlinear absorption coefficient and third order nonlinear refraction index were investigated. The effects of chemical structure on third order nonlinear optical properties of these materials were discussed.
