Phenol resins are important materials in our daily life.Thus,the hazard of the phenol resins is one of our concerning problems,especially the free formaldehyde.It is known that fructose could be degraded to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural when certain catalyst exists.And phenol resin can be synthesized through the reaction of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural and phenols. The resulted resins are free of formaldehyde.In the first part,we simply introduced the history of phenol resin,the properties of phenol resin,the application of phenol resin,and the study of environment-friendly phenol resin.We designed plans to synthesize five types phenol resins taking the fructose as the material. Through the orthogonal experiments,we gained the optimum reaction conditions.Besides,we used the responsive surface methodology to optimise the reaction condition of the fructose-phenol resin and fructose-paracresol resin.Through the software of Design Expert, we gained models,and equations of the functional relationship of the factors and the viscosity. In addition,we gained the optimum conditions through the fuctional equations.Polymer materials are widely used,presently.However,these materials have potential safety hazard——they are easily burned.Adding flame retardants can not only enhance the fire proofing of the materials,but also can reduce combustibility of the polymers,as well as the smoke or toxic fume production.Flame retardants can be used in plastics,woods,paper products,and fabrics.Thus,the use of flame retardants becomes a pivotal part of the development and the application of new materials.In the second part,we described the mechanism of polymer flame retardants,and introduced several kinds of flame retardants.We also designed and synthesized a type of melamine-formaldehyde resin which contains nitrogen and phosphorus.This type of resin has flame-retardant properties.We also characterized the resin through FTIR.
