Traditional analytical method of gun propellant takes too much time and the process is too complicated. In order to conquer these disadvantages, enlarge the analytical extension and improve the analytical ability of gun propellant, a new kind of analytical method was established in this paper. Based on the advantages of rapid development of instrumental analysis, considering the component characteristic of gun propellant, analytical method of gun propellant especially nitrocellulose-based gun propellant was improved. And using a gun propellant sample whose components were unknown as representative case, experimental research on the sample's pre-treating and entire analysis were also studied. The results show that reasonable pre-treating was to choose a appropriate solvent which can't dissolve nitrocellulose and inorganic components to separate the organic components from the gun propellant firstly, then choose another solvent which can dissolve nitrocellulose to detach nitrocellulose from the gun propellant and keep the inorganic components. The qualitative analysis of macromolecule component was completed by IR and the result showed that it was nitrocellulose (NC). The molecular weight and N% of NC were tested by GPC and ultimate analysis respectively. The organic components were separated by column chromatography, and each contribution was qualitatively analyzed by GC-MS and quantitatively analyzed by HPLC. Through these processes, the structure and mass percentage of each contribution of the organic admixture were ascertained. Another gun propellant which components were known was analyzed as standard sample using the same process and methods. The results show that the analysis results accorded with the sample and the analysis efficiency was improved greatly.
