With the development of modern industry and transportation, problems of air pollution in cities are increasingly serious; at the same time, people who have high living conditions have asked for higher environmental quality. In order to eliminate effectively air pollution and improve environmental quality, scientific assessment on air quality is necessary firstly. It is very significant to identify objectively present status of air pollution , forecast trend of air pollution , control air pollution and implement sustainable development.In the contemporary society, Air Pollution Index (API) that is widely used in the world is applied to assessment on air quality in all of cities of our country. This method is not only simple and intuitionistic but also show quantificationally level of air pollution; meanwhile, it makes people know clearly their habitat and provides many directions for people. However, this method has a serious disadvantage when it is applied that is not comparable. Therefore, this thesis is improving the present method so as to make it reflect air quality more reasonably and compare air quality of different cities scientificly.Take example for air quality data of Zhengzhou, this thesis assesses the atmosphere environmental quality with the method of improved Grey Cluster Method. This method sets up albefacted function first, then assesses air quality of different places according to comparison of degree of membership of different level. This thesis also develops a program based on ArcGIS and MapObjects to assess.The result proves: This method is related to air quality data and range of grading standards, thus the presion of the result is high. At the same time, this method adopts calculational methods respectively according to different level and takes advantage of information sufficiently . It can not only assess air quality of different places but also compare air quality of different cities scientificly. Therefore, this method is scientific, simple, accurate. It is successful applied to analyze and evaluate the atmosphere environment quality of Zhengzhou city.
